May Family Day

Join us this May half term for a day of creative, collaborative activities exploring biodiversity and our connection to the natural world around us.

A child and a carer dyeing a piece of fabric in Garden Through Time at Museum of the Home.

Explore the microscopic networks that link us with plant and animal life. Combine woodworking and weaving to create your own vibrant artworks mapping out the amazing garden ecosystem. Then harness the power of printmaking to share a powerful message promoting kindness to nature, using natural dye inks and materials from the garden.

Our usual family resources will also be available: the Mini Playhouse, sensory den, playroom, family trails and sensory explorer bags.

What's on

Mapping Microcosms with Nihal J. Singh | 10.30am - 3.30pm in the Studio

Get up close with the natural world with artist and maker Nihal Singh. Hammer and weave your own colourful wooden board exploring the connecting lines and patterns seen in microscopic forms. Families will also be invited to interact with our symbiotic play space, including a large-scale weaving wall.

Natural Dye Printing with Kim Chin | 10.30am - 3.30pm in the Learning Pavilion

Make your own printed flags using natural dyes, inspired by shapes and forms in the garden. Kim will help families to create artworks promoting kindness to nature and protecting the planet. Contribute to the collaborative garden sculpture, experimenting with mark-making to add textural vibrant details.

We use the term family broadly to include any form of family structure, including LGBTQIA+ families, chosen family, friends and allies.

The event is free of charge with a suggested donation of £5. Drop-ins are welcome on the day.
