No Place Like Home (Part II): Performances

As part of the No Place Like Home exhibition, join us to explore unexpected performative practices at the crossroads of disciplines by diaspora artists.

A person bends backwards on their knees

Join us for a series of dance performances, programmed alongside our current exhibition, No Place Like Home

Performance one (2.30pm): Unhomely by KV Duong

Unhomely is a live performance enhanced by an immersive screen projection and a soundscape. Artist KV Duong explores his parents' physical journey across the Pacific Ocean, fleeing a war-torn country to find refuge in Canada. At the same time, he shares his own psychological journey as a queer artist, having grown up in an immigrant family.

Performer: KV Duong

Performance two (2.50pm): You by Mai-Tri Nguyen

You is a film by by Susannah Kala Limbu featuring the artist Nguyen Tri Mai. Filmed in the artist's own apartment, the story captures her struggle with a chronic mental health condition. Her poetry and Butoh dance act as metaphors for finding connection and escape from nothingness and death. At the end of the screening Mai will invite the public to follow her in a performance responding to the theme of the exhibition No Place Like Home.

Performance three (3:30pm): Heat Génération by Minh Lan Tran

Heat Génération (Prayer) is the result of a collaboration between artist Minh Lan Tran and choreographer Lena Hetzel on a music by Vincent Ruiz Nguyen. The choreography was developed as a collective endeavour, continuously integrating the participants' points of view on violence and their responses to each other. Heat Génération (Prayer) explores violence as a process of transformation, encompassing infliction, internalisation, and ultimately the merging and inversion of temporalities. As the performance begins with death, the viewer is immersed in uncertainty, wondering if the unfolding journey leads back or to the life that lies beyond.

Performers: Minh Lan Tran, Chandenie Gobardhan, Pablo Saavedra, Papito Kenneth Cruz, Kay Boyce
Choregraphy: Minh Lan Tran, Lena Hetzel
Music: Vincent Ruiz Nguyen
